Welcome to “grass roots” aviation and the Penobscot Valley Chapter 827 of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).

EAA Chapter 827 celebrated its 25th year in 2010. The Chapter traces its roots back to an organizational meeting one snowy February evening at Dewitt Field in Old Town, Maine. In May of 1984 we received our Chapter charter from EAA. The first elected officers were Don Cole (President), Jerry Chase (Vice President), Gary Smith (Treasurer), and Jim McKinney (Secretary). Ernie Sanborn served as the Chapter’s first newsletter editor – titled “AIRSCOOP”, the logo developed by member Bob Day. At the January 2009 Chapter meeting, members elected founding president Don Cole to Director Emeritus to recognize his many years of continuing Chapter leadership and promotion of recreational aviation in our region. Many thanks go out to these visionaries who took the initiative to form Chapter 827.

EAA is comprised of nearly 1,000 chapters around the world and provides a forum for members to share their love of aviation. EAA’s vision is – “To be the leading community of enthusiasts, passionately engaged in appreciating and enjoying aviation.”

Members bring a diversity of interests that represent all aspects of recreational aviation. You don’t need to be a pilot to become a member, you only need to have an interest in any area of aviation, whether for light airplanes, ultralights, light-sport aircraft, vintage airplanes, warbirds, or building or restoring airplanes.

Penobscot Valley Chapter 827 is the local EAA chapter serving the greater Penobscot Valley region of Maine. We typically meet at 9 a.m. on the third Saturday of the month at Miller’s Field (ME 74) in Newburgh, and guests are always welcome.

A number of our talented and dedicated chapter members are currently building a Wagabond airplane. The Wagabond Builders Group meets most Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

If you have an interest in aviation we invite you to attend our chapter meetings, and to consider becoming a member. We would be happy to answer questions or provide you with more information about the benefits of becoming a member, or about the Wagabond Builders Group.
